About Chefs Choice Wild Rice
Chefs Choice Grade A Wild Rice has dark, glossy grains in varying lengths that turn a deep brown colour when cooked. Cultivated in Minnesota, this wild rice offers a heady, roasted flavour.
Wild rice—which isn’t a rice at all, but is actually a species of grass—was for centuries gathered and eaten by North American natives, and the very same plants still grow wild in the forested areas of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, as well as in several US regions. An additional species, called Manchurian wild rice, is unique to China. Adding wild rice to your diet is easy—it’s perfect as a side dish or as a main course, and can substitute for true rice in almost any dish. The rice has a nutty, rich flavour that lends itself perfectly to a wide variety of recipes, including salads, soups, pasta dishes, and stir-fries. It’s great in stuffing, and adds a luxurious richness to your favourite hot breakfast grains. Like so many whole foods, wild rice isn’t just delicious, however—it’s a highly nutritious grain, which is currently being studied by scientists hoping to unlock a potentially wide range of health benefits.
